Pre-operative advice for osteoarthritis of the knee and osteoarthritis of the hip

If you are going in for a joint replacement you probably won’t know what to expect.  You may have questions about how you prepare and what will happen afterwards.

It can be a worrying and confusing time. As experts in rehabilitation, physiotherapists can advise on different strategies to help you understand your condition and reduce your pain.  Where appropriate, this will involve specifically tailored individual exercise programmes.  Being as strong as you can prior to your operation will most definitely help your rehabilitation afterwards. That doesn’t mean you need to experience huge exacerbations of pain. Your physiotherapist will work with you to determine the best exercises for you in preparation for your procedure.

You will leave with an understanding of what osteoarthritis is and what to expect post operatively.  Preparing for the procedure and the post operative rehabilitation is essential in supporting your Consultant’s decision to operate and will help you through to the best and most successful outcome you can achieve.
